Questions & Answers
I am in the process of buying a new restaurant, am I required to upgrade the kitchen suppression system to meet UL300 requirements?
This is a loaded question. Although the state of NJ does not require an existing fire suppression system to be upgraded if there have been no changes to the appliances or the exhaust hood, this may cause you a problem in the future. Many manufacturers have discontinued supporting their non-UL 300 suppression systems. In the event of a fire you may not be able to put the system back into service. This could cause a substantial disruption to your business.
How often are emergency lights/exit signs required to be tested?
The state of NJ requires that all egress lighting be tested monthly for 30 seconds. However, all egress lighting must be tested annually for 60 minutes in order to stay in compliance.
I have a fire alarm system in my building, is it required to have central station monitoring?
Yes, the state of NJ now requires that any fire alarm system installed in accordance with the construction code shall be monitored by an approved central station.
