In required structures there are firewalls that help contain fires from spreading rapidly. These walls are fire resistant structures that run continuously from the foundation of a building to the roof. They basically divide a structure into separate buildings.
When holes are made in firewalls for things like electrical, plumbing, and ventilation, these walls require firestop in order to maintain the integrity of the firewall. To prevent flames, smoke and gases from spreading through holes that puncture the firewall, physical barriers known as firestops are used. The following are examples of materials that are firestops; silicone, firestop pillows, mineral fibers, rubber, intumescents, or cementitious mortars.
