October is right around the corner, which means Fire Prevention week is almost here! This year, fire prevention week will be from October 7th - 13th. The theme is "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere."
With modern construction material used to build homes, multi-family residences and buildings, fires burn a lot faster than they used to. During a house fire, occupants may have as little as two minutes to safely escape the fire. Fires can occur anywhere at any time, the goal of NFPA’s Fire Protection Week is to educate and promote fire safety and prevention. To help prevent fires, it is important to Look, Listen and Learn.
Look for places fire can start. Take the time to look around your house or business for places where fire can start, by going from room to room. Once those areas have been identified, address them so fires do not start.
There may be nothing more frustrating than listening to the beeping of a smoke alarm that needs new batteries. But, have you ever heard a working fire alarm going off? Listen to the sound of a working fire alarm to familiarize yourself with it, so when you hear it you know how to react.
Learn two ways out of every room! It may seem easy to know every way to get out of your house or office, but have you actually established two ways to get out of every room? What about your children or coworkers? Make a plan and practice the plan with your family and your coworkers.
